Getting away is good for the body and soul...
Getting away from reality is good for the body and soul and getting away from the usual workout routine can be really good for the body. Think about it....vacation can be the perfect time to exercise. You are FREE from your routine. By freeing yourself from your routine, you open your mind to new ways to move your body, have fun and keep your body fit while you're on vacation.
If you do decide to use your vacation as a time to rest from exercise entirely, you may wonder what happens to your body. How long can you go before you lose fitness levels?
Well how fast you lose endurance and/or muscle depends mostly on genetics, but below are some general reseach findings:
- Aerobic power can decline 5-10% in just three weeks.
- All your gains could be gone after about 2 months of inactivity.
- You tend to lose aerobic capacity faster than muscular strength. Muscles are resilient and retain a memory of all those exercises you did.
- All it takes is 6 days of total inactivity for you to begin to lose your muscle tone.
Taking a week off probably won't make much of a difference but, any more than that, and it may be harder to get back to your previous levels. Finding ways to stay as active as you can will keep you fit, help you avoid weight gain and make the transition back to real life a little easier.
It's easy to stay fit while on vacation....just meet with a personal trainer and ask her to design a 30-minute no equipment interval workout for you. All you'll need is about a 3'x6' space and you will be good to go.
And...when you continue to stay active while on vacation you will stay in the "healthy" state of mind. You'll make better choices overall in the foods decided to put into your body, the amount of rest you decide to get and ultimate the good health you want to live. Fitness is really.....a way of life.
